  • Background: compact dirt roads, stretches of agricultural dirt road and some rougher passages in the woods

Il Mount Longo It is a complete gravel climb and very representative of the Berici Hills: never extreme, but sufficiently complex to require attention, rhythm and riding sensitivity.

Technical analysis of the climb – zone by zone

1. Approach and attack (orange/red zone)

The start is decided: the start of the climb happens almost without warning, with a drier initial ramp which immediately leads to finding your own pace.
The surface is compact, but the gradient requires the use of agile gears and a smooth pedal stroke. This is the section where any excess energy is at risk.

Technical key: set off under control, avoid "ripping off".

2. Wavy central section (yellow/green area)

Once the initial impact is over, the climb enters its gravel heart: more regular slope, undulating shape, wide curves and smooth surface.
Here, short, seemingly flat sections alternate with gentle climbs that allow you to catch your breath without ever breaking your rhythm.

Technical key: constant pace, fluid cadence, exploiting micro-recoveries.

3. Section in the woods (green/blue zone)

The road enters the woods, the surface becomes more natural and the environment becomes silent.
The slopes decrease slightly, but caution is required due to leaves, fine gravel, and some ruts.

Technical key: clean driving, smooth trajectories, attention to grip.

4. Exit and final (yellow zone)

The last part climbs more linearly towards the arrival point. It's not hard, but it gets there. after kilometers of continuous work, so it makes itself felt in the legs.
The surface becomes compact again and the climb ends with a sensation of constant progression until the top.

Technical key: relaunch without forcing, manage the residual effort.

Gravel sensations

Monte Longo is a climb that does not attack, but accompanies.
It gives its best to those who love endurance gravel: the kind made of rhythm, listening to the terrain and continuity.
The legs are constantly working, but without dramatic peaks; the mind relaxes thanks to the variety of the route.

It's a climb that "flows", ideal to include in a long tour.

Naturalistic aspects

Mount Longo crosses a landscape typical of the Berici Hills:

  • woods of downy oak and hornbeam,
  • agricultural clearings and vineyards,
  • open views of the Vicenza plain.

Biodiversity is high and, during quieter hours, it is not uncommon to spot roe deer or birds of prey in flight.

Artistic and historical places

The Montecchio Maggiore area is strongly linked to its rural and hilly history:

  • ancient stone farmhouses,
  • dry stone walls,
  • historic routes connecting the valley and the hills.

In the vicinity you can feel the cultural influence of the Romeo and Juliet's Castles, symbol of the territory.

How to deal with it

  • Recommended ratios: compact (e.g. 40Ɨ42 or equivalent)
  • Covers: 38–42 mm ideal
  • Pressures: medium-low for comfort and traction
  • Ideal period: spring and autumn
  • Attention: leaves and damp ground in the woods

Identikit of the climb

  • Style: endurance gravel
  • Character: constant, elegant
  • Ideal for: those who love long, pedal-friendly climbs
  • Recommended level: intermediate
  • Perfect pairings: gravel rings of the Berici Hills

In short (Italian only)

Il Mount Longo It's a yellow climb that embodies the spirit of hilly gravel: never extreme, always authentic.
One of those climbs that don't try to impress, but that they remain in the memory for balance, scenery and driving pleasure.

The Gravel Badges

Badge I - Romeo and Juliet Castles

They symbolize the entire new north-western territory of Berici Climbs, the offshoots of the Castellari Mountains, spectacular places of transition between the Berico plateau and the pre-Alpine slopes.

The very difficult Strada dei Carri (Wagon Road) that leads to the castles in the municipality of Montecchio Maggiore is representative of this part of the park.

Badge II - Sanctuary of Monte Berico

A symbolic site for the entire park, of great and rare beauty, beloved by the Giro d'Italia with two stage finishes in ten years. It also hosts two gravel climbs, including the wonderful and pleasant Colonia Bedin.

Badge III-Villabalzana

It represents a bastion, a port of arrival for many climbs in the northern area. A wonderful place surrounded by greenery with breathtaking views of Lake Fimon and the entire pre-Alpine chain.

Badge IV - Grancona

A symbolic place of the southern block, its large square, the church that looks more like an ancient castle and the panoramic terrace overlooking the Val Liona make Grancona a sought-after and desired destination.

Badge V - Hermitage of Dan Donato

It is a magical place, full of spirituality, where the rock of the hills merges with the human action to draw a perfect frame, a painting from which you can admire the skyline of the Euganean Hills and recover the seconds of time passed, here you can perceive the true essence of Berici Climbs, memento vivere.

VI- Gravel Super Hero Badge

The badge that certifies that you are the real heroes! Climbing 50 gravel climbs is a great feat that deserves to be celebrated, because the effort is hard, but even more so is managing to complete a complex journey in an often complicated and crowded life.
