An elegant and complete climb, not impressive for its brutality but captivating for its continuity, variety, and landscape. Monte Corno is a classic "tempo" hill climb, perfect for those who love climbs that are easy to pedal but never boring.

📊 General information

  • Location: Altavilla Vicentina (VI)
  • Side: South–South/West
  • Length: 2,54 km
  • Difference: 131 m
  • Average slope: 4,3%
  • Maximum slope: ~15% (first section)
  • Departure altitude: ~ 39 m
  • Arrival altitude: ~ 170 m

🧠 Technical analysis of the climb

The elevation profile shows a two-stage climb , with a selective start and a long, flowing central section, ideal for building aerobic power.

🔴 Zone 1 – The Attack (0,0 – 0,6 km)

  • Average gradient: 8–10%
  • Peaks: 13–15%

The entrance is immediately serious. The road steepens sharply, forcing you to immediately find the right gear.
This is the hardest section: short, but capable of "firing up" your legs. This is where the main difficulty of the entire climb lies.

Technical key: don't overdo it. If you start on acid, the climb will lose its flow.

🟡 Zone 2 – The Transition (0,6 – 1,0 km)

  • Gradient: 6–7%

After the first wall, the road offers some breathing space but remains selective.
This is a settling-in stretch: the climb becomes more regular, ideal for stabilizing at an aerobic threshold pace.

Here we can understand whether the initial management was correct.

🟢 Zone 3 – The central body (1,0 – 2,2 km)

  • Constant gradient: 3,5–5%

Monte Corno shows its true nature: sliding climb.
Wide curves, a smooth slope, and a wide road: the perfect terrain for pushing with a high cadence and a rounded pedal stroke.

It has a very short stretch of dirt road in excellent condition.

This is the section where the climbers make the difference.

Zone 4 – The Finale (2,2 – 2,54 km)

  • Gradient: 5–6%

For the last 300 meters, the road gradually climbs. It's not a wall, but it arrives when your legs are already loaded.
An ending to be interpreted with lucidity, gradually relaunching.

🚴‍♂️ Road sensations

Monte Corno is a climb polite but not obvious.
At first he grabs you by the collar, then he steadily accompanies you to the top.

The perception is that of a “well-constructed” climb:
first selects, then lets you express yourself.

It's a climb that leaves you satisfied, never frustrated.

🌿 Naturalistic aspects

The climb crosses the hill system of the western Berici Mountains , with:

  • downy oak and black hornbeam forests
  • grassy clearings and vineyards
  • continuous glimpses of the Vicenza plain

In the central stretch, vegetation envelops the road, creating a cool microclimate even in summer. In spring, soft greenery and the scents of wild flowers dominate.

🏛️ Presence of artistic places

Altavilla Vicentina is Palladian land. Nearby are:

  • Villa Valmarana Morosini
  • Villa Zileri Motterle (not far away)

Monte Corno itself is part of the historic landscape of Venetian villas, where architecture and hills have interacted for centuries.

🧩 How to deal with it

  • Relationships: 34×28 recommended for attack
  • Ideal cadence:
    • 70–75 rpm in the first stretch
    • 85–95 rpm in the middle part
  • Effort Management:
    • check the intensity in the first 600 m
    • build a steady pace from 1 to 2,2 km
    • final progression

Perfect climb for sweet spot work or continuous medium-high intensity.

🪪 Identikit of the climb

  • Type: Selective start pace increase
  • Style: Technical, flowing
  • Ideal soil: Quality training
  • Key point: First kilometer
  • Personality: Elegant but demanding

The Gravel Badges

Badge I - Romeo and Juliet Castles

They symbolize the entire new north-western territory of Berici Climbs, the offshoots of the Castellari Mountains, spectacular places of transition between the Berico plateau and the pre-Alpine slopes.

The very difficult Strada dei Carri (Wagon Road) that leads to the castles in the municipality of Montecchio Maggiore is representative of this part of the park.

Badge II - Sanctuary of Monte Berico

A symbolic site for the entire park, of great and rare beauty, beloved by the Giro d'Italia with two stage finishes in ten years. It also hosts two gravel climbs, including the wonderful and pleasant Colonia Bedin.

Badge III-Villabalzana

It represents a bastion, a port of arrival for many climbs in the northern area. A wonderful place surrounded by greenery with breathtaking views of Lake Fimon and the entire pre-Alpine chain.

Badge IV - Grancona

A symbolic place of the southern block, its large square, the church that looks more like an ancient castle and the panoramic terrace overlooking the Val Liona make Grancona a sought-after and desired destination.

Badge V - Hermitage of Dan Donato

It is a magical place, full of spirituality, where the rock of the hills merges with the human action to draw a perfect frame, a painting from which you can admire the skyline of the Euganean Hills and recover the seconds of time passed, here you can perceive the true essence of Berici Climbs, memento vivere.

VI- Gravel Super Hero Badge

The badge that certifies that you are the real heroes! Climbing 50 gravel climbs is a great feat that deserves to be celebrated, because the effort is hard, but even more so is managing to complete a complex journey in an often complicated and crowded life.
