Respect the Cyclist – 1,5 m distance

The climbs and roads within the Berici Climbs cycling park will be progressively equipped with special vertical signage to encourage motorists to slow down and maintain a safe distance from cyclists.

The municipalities of Vicenza and Altavilla Vicentina (leaders and pioneers of the project) will install the "Respect the Cyclist 1,5 m Distance" sign.

The signs will be installed near the climbs between the 100 belonging to the two municipalities, and will mark the main road that we think can be followed by all the other municipalities in the park.

The story of the sign "I respect cyclists 1,5 meters away"

"In Italy, a cyclist dies every 35 hours, a shocking and unacceptable figure," says Paola Gianotti, founder, together with Marco Cavorso and Maurizio Fondriest, of the association "I respect the cyclist."

So what are we waiting for to make our beautiful country a place where a cyclist doesn't die every 35 hours? Paola states, "I've been fighting for road safety for years, ever since I was hit in the American desert during my round-the-world bike ride, and ever since I met Marco Cavorso, Tommy's father, who was killed by a car at 14 while training with his team, returning from the world tour.

Together with Maurizio Fondriest, we founded the "Io rispetto il ciclista" association, which aims to promote cyclist safety on the road through various activities, especially the installation of road signs indicating the presence of a cyclist and warnings to overtake at a distance of one and a half meters.

A long and ambitious project that has already seen the installation of over 800 signs in more than 200 Italian municipalities, including Turin, Alba, Siena, Caltagirone, and Civitanova Marche. The association, thanks to the invaluable help of our friend and cyclist Cristina Doimo, has invited all Italian municipalities to install these cyclist-friendly signs. These signs are already present in many European countries and we must implement them on our roads as often as possible.

Signs at the start of the climb

Also starting from the climbs in the municipalities of Vicenza and Altavilla Vicentina, signs will be installed indicating the name/number/color/main characteristics of the climb (distance, gradient, elevation gain) and will include a QR code from which cyclists can easily land on the specific climb page on the BericiClimbs website.

The Gravel Badges

Badge I - Romeo and Juliet Castles

They symbolize the entire new north-western territory of Berici Climbs, the offshoots of the Castellari Mountains, spectacular places of transition between the Berico plateau and the pre-Alpine slopes.

The very difficult Strada dei Carri (Wagon Road) that leads to the castles in the municipality of Montecchio Maggiore is representative of this part of the park.

Badge II - Sanctuary of Monte Berico

A symbolic site for the entire park, of great and rare beauty, beloved by the Giro d'Italia with two stage finishes in ten years. It also hosts two gravel climbs, including the wonderful and pleasant Colonia Bedin.

Badge III-Villabalzana

It represents a bastion, a port of arrival for many climbs in the northern area. A wonderful place surrounded by greenery with breathtaking views of Lake Fimon and the entire pre-Alpine chain.

Badge IV - Grancona

A symbolic place of the southern block, its large square, the church that looks more like an ancient castle and the panoramic terrace overlooking the Val Liona make Grancona a sought-after and desired destination.

Badge V - Hermitage of Dan Donato

It is a magical place, full of spirituality, where the rock of the hills merges with the human action to draw a perfect frame, a painting from which you can admire the skyline of the Euganean Hills and recover the seconds of time passed, here you can perceive the true essence of Berici Climbs, memento vivere.

VI- Gravel Super Hero Badge

The badge that certifies that you are the real heroes! Climbing 50 gravel climbs is a great feat that deserves to be celebrated, because the effort is hard, but even more so is managing to complete a complex journey in an often complicated and crowded life. This is an achievement of resilience and passion, it's your achievement! Hold on to it!
